"Moths may not be the most delicate creatures, but they always come close to the light," Souly explained to me when I asked about the origin of his fascination with the animal. Ever since he announced his latest EP Moth Music, moths are on his album covers, in his stage designs, his lyrics, his language, his merch. Somehow the moth signifies everything.
Moths are creatures of the in-between, and it's a condition Souly seems to chase in the music itself, that genre-fluid, flickering sound between rap and trap; but also on the level of his persona, in which you discover his melancholic "loser" sound transform into a raging, incandescent rap artist at any given time.
It's fascinating to watch him develop his own aesthetic with a certain calmness, always seeming to evolve his own work in a surprising way. His precise vision has now taken shape in his own festival called MOTH FEST, celebrating its debut this Friday in Hannover, where Souly acts not only as the host and performer, but also as the curator of his own handpicked lineup of other artists.
In collaboration with Crocs, whose new versatile editions of the Echo II Model were styled in a variety of settings, this editorial by Michael Anthony Baumann and Franka Rosa Maria Klaproth explores Souly’s artistic identity as the moth man.
