COUCOU CHLOE, French-born, London-based trifecta (singer, producer, and DJ) strikes rather than transpires. Last month, she dropped CANDYLAND, a gritty and elastic corollary to her previous release, VENOM. Both singles serve as demarcators of CHLOE’s newly-adopted musical tenet: In CANDYLAND, for example, the samples are distorted and splintered, the drums are volatile, and the energy overall woozy and warping. This era’s genesis is not unfamiliar per-se, since CHLOE’s tonality keeps pace with all that precedes it. However, it manages to convey a novel sense of menace and delirium that lurches all throughout both tracks, rendering their sound distinct.
